Mayor Extends Gratitude to Residents, City Groups, and Organizations for a Successful Juneteenth Celebration Weekend

Over two days filled with sunshine and celebration, the city celebrated Juneteenth with a weekend filled with festivities and activities for the community ahead of the commemoration date on Monday, June 19th.

Festivities included the Juneteenth Caravan, the Juneteenth Celebration in ELY Square, and the 2nd Annual Juneteenth Smart Set Memorial game.

Mayor Frank Whitfield extends his thanks to the residents of Elyria for their enthusiastic participation in the weekend’s events. The mayor also extends sincere appreciation to the numerous city groups and organizations that worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the smooth execution of the Juneteenth celebration. The celebration could not have happened without the dedication, commitment, and collaborative efforts that were instrumental in creating a wonderful experience for all.

Mayor Whitfield would like to specifically commend the following individuals and organizations:

  • The Juneteenth Planning Committee, specifically Ethan West, Stacey Balmuta, Rachael Jackson, Sherman Jones, Ike Amison, and Pastor and First Lady Carter. Their tireless efforts in planning and organizing the Juneteenth celebration were instrumental in its success.
  • Several city of Elyria team members, especially Carrie Reardon, Director of the Elyria Parks and Recreation Department, Lt. Lee Frank of the Elyria Police Department, Mark Ballard II, Whitney Trimble, and Lise Day. Their dedication was invaluable in ensuring a memorable and safe event for the community.
  • Several organizations whose collaboration and support made indispensable contributions to the smooth execution of the Juneteenth celebration. Those organizations include the Elyria Black Legacy Connection, Elyria YWCA, Jones Chapel AME, Vendemark Jewelers, and the City of Elyria as a whole.

Mayor Whitfield is grateful for the collective efforts of these groups, individuals, and organizations for their contributions in ensuring a successful Juneteenth celebration.
