PRESS RELEASE: VFW Post 1079 Honors Military Families through Hometown Heroes Sponsorship

ELYRIA, OH – VFW Post 1079 has announced sponsorship of families who have purchased banners through the Hometown Heroes Banner Program in Elyria.

The program honors the men and woman of the Armed Forces who have ties to Elyria. Local families are able to purchase the banners, and the City of Elyria installs them as a display along Middle Ave. The City
plans to display the banners each year beginning in October through Veteran’s Day.

The VFW’s sponsorship means 30 families who have already purchased the banners displayed will receive a reimbursement covering half the original cost. “The Post is grateful to be able to support this program
with the City,” said Marco Cuevas, VFW Legacy Life Member and current Post Officer. “Our Veterans and their families have already sacrificed so much. Helping to honor them and their service is just one of the ways we can support military families while increasing
awareness of the contribution Veterans have in the community.”

“I’m so grateful to Marco Cuevas and the VFW,” Mayor Frank Whitfield said. “This is a great example of how our administration, residents, and organizations can come together to really do something special. Finding
ways to partner with organizations like the VFW is important to us. I know the families who purchased these banners will appreciate such a generation donation.”

This is the first year the City of Elyria has participated in the Hometown Heroes Banner Program, which began in Harrisburg, PA in 2006. Since it’s inception, dozens of cities across America have joined the
program to honor thousands of local veterans.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. is the nation’s largest and oldest major war veterans organization. Founded in 1899, the congressionally-chartered VFW is comprised entirely of eligible veterans and
military service members from the Active, Guard and Reserve Forces. Elyria VFW Post 1079 is located at 500 S. Abbe Rd. If you are interested in learning more or becoming involved with their work, please call (440) 365-8500 or email
publicaffairs@vfw1079.org.

The City of Elyria is currently accepting orders for next year’s banners, which will be displayed along with the banners already purchased along Middle Ave. Visit cityofelyria.org/hometownhero or call (440) 366-1420.
