POSITION: Route Manager – CDL

DEPARTMENT: Sanitation

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Operate a Rear and/or Side Load Sanitation Truck Unit which includes:
    • Driving throughout entire route.
    • Making all scheduled stops.
    • Loading all required refuse at a rate of speed sufficient to cover the entire assigned route or area in the prescribed time.
  • Perform the following daily tasks on assigned unit prior to the completion of shift:
    • Refuel daily.
    • Properly clean inside and outside.
    • Report all observed mechanical problems or malfunctions.
    • Perform general maintenance as directed by appropriate supervisor.
  • Perform all other departmental tasks as directed by appropriate supervisor.
  • Safety precautions are expected of the operator of the heavy-duty sanitation trucks.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must be in the possession and continually maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class – B with air brake endorsement.
  • Must be able to perform heavy manual labor, which includes lifting, reaching, stretching and bending.
  • Must be dependable and in excellent physical condition.
  • Must have and continually maintain a working telephone (proof will be required and records must be kept up to date).
  • Must be trustworthy and able to satisfactorily communicate with other employees and the general public
  • Must demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.
  • Ability to work independently, with teams and with other City departments.
  • Ability to identify unsafe conditions of equipment and report same to management.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must have appropriate knowledge of Sanitation Department refuse collection and disposal requirements, procedures, and equipment.
  • Must have appropriate skills in order to perform minor vehicle repairs and adjustments.
  • Must have knowledge of and be able to perform a variety of unskilled maintenance and manual tasks and have the ability to properly use basic tools.
  • Must have the ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must act in a prudent manner in the protection of and maintenance of city equipment and property.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED

The following are examples only and are not intended to be all-inclusive:

Heavy-duty sanitation trucks, possibly snowplow, wood chipper, chainsaw and leaf removal equipment.

RATE OF PAY:  $54,000-$57,000

SCHEDULE OF HOURS:

Primary hours of work will be Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

***May involve some overtime per Collective Bargaining Agreement***

This position demands off-schedule hours, call-in hours, stand-by work, and other non-routinely scheduled duties.  Incumbents must understand that their flexibility is second to the City’s work demands during times of weather or service emergencies.
