OVERVIEW

Auxiliary officers are not sworn police officers but they do support the EPD with patrol operations, special events and details. Applicants may apply at any point during the year and will be considered an Auxiliary Cadet until they complete all mandatory training.

Cadets complete a 3-month training academy coordinated by the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office that is free of cost to the cadet. The academy is held at Lorain County Community College from January-April on Tuesdays and Thursday from 6-:00-10:00 PM. Cadets receive instruction in police procedures, laws and ordinances of the City of Elyria and the State of Ohio, self-defense and firearms skills.

Auxiliary personnel must wear EPD-issued clothing and equipment. Auxiliary personnel are required to volunteer 144 hours of service each year. Academy time will be counted towards these hours. The minimum requirements for an Auxiliary Officer are the following:

  • Must be 19 years of age or older
  • Must have high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must have a valid drivers license
  • Must pass background examination
