Elyria’s Building and Land Department plays a key role in the City’s commitment to interconnection and cooperation—ensuring that “safety” and “services” combine seamlessly for residents and businesses alike. Everything we do is to make Elyria a great place to live, learn, work and play. How do we measure our success? The City of Elyria’s compliance rate has risen from 22% to 95% since 2012.
WHAT WE DO
The City of Elyria’s Building and Land Department regulates and promotes public safety by adopting and enforcing codes, issuing permits, and investigating property maintenance complaints.
The Building and Land Department is responsible for supervising construction activities, by registering and licensing contractors, and inspecting exterior structures.
The Building and Land Department is certified by the State of Ohio Board of Building Standards, for all Use Groups in the Ohio Building Codes, and is an active member of the International Code Council (ICC) and the North Central Ohio Building Officials Association (N.C.O.B.O.A). The City of Elyria enforces the following codes and standards:
