From the Mayor’s Office:
I’m proud to recognize two outstanding staff members for Employees of the Month — Scott Hennigan from our Forestry Division and Jamais Kirk from the Sanitation Department. Both stepped up in very different situations, but each reminded us what great public service looks like: showing up, doing the work, and looking out for others.
Scott Hennigan – Forestry Division, Public Works
Nominated by Safety Service Director Chris Pyanowski and Fire Chief Joe Pronesti
We all remember the storm that rolled through Elyria last month leaving a trail of destruction across the city. Before the rain had even stopped, Scott came in after hours — on the eve of his vacation, no less — to help respond to five large trees that had come down in our neighborhoods. He worked with multiple departments and contractors to get things cleared up quickly and safely.
Scott is the kind of person you want on your team. He’s reliable, communicates well, and jumps in wherever he’s needed — even when it’s not part of the original plan. Safety Service Director Chris Pyanowski nominated Scott: “He’s a great example of what we want to see in a city employee.” Elyria Fire Department Chief Pronesti also reached out about Scott’s dedication, saying, “He always rises to the occasion and follows up with an update when the chaos settles.” Scott’s quick response in an emergency is one thing, but that kind of follow-through after things calm down truly means a lot.
Jamais Kirk – Sanitation Department
Nominated by resident Beth Crossan
Sometimes, public service isn’t about a big emergency — it’s about doing the right thing in a quiet moment. While out on his normal route, Jamais saw a resident fall in the street after tripping while carrying some heavy binders. Without hesitation, he stopped his truck, held up traffic, and helped her up. He took the time to ensure she was safe before allowing traffic to resume.
The resident, Beth Crossan, wrote us to make sure Jamais was recognized. She said, “I was injured, stunned, and in pain… I’m so grateful. I want to be sure his bosses know that he was not only paying attention to his surroundings but showed great kindness and concern for my wellbeing. Please find out who he is for me.”
Thank you for reaching out, Beth. It didn’t take long for us to find out who helped you, and when we realized it was Jamais none of us were surprised. We are grateful to have him on our team serving residents like you.
Jamais didn’t have to do what he did. But he was paying attention, and he showed real kindness. That matters, too.
Please join me in thanking Scott and Jamais for everything they do for our community. Whether it’s cleaning up storm damage or helping someone in need, these are the kinds of everyday public servants who keep Elyria strong.
Take care,
— Mayor Kevin A. Brubaker
