CITY OF ELYRIA, OHIO POLICE OFFICER POSITION – ENTRY LEVEL IMMEDIATE HIRING

INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS

The Elyria Civil Service Commission is accepting applications for the 2026 POLICE OFFICER examination. Applicants must complete and submit an online application through PoliceApp.com.

The examination process has two, separately-administered components, i.e., the physical agility test and the written test. The physical agility test is administered first, then the written test. Applicants will be disqualified immediately if they do not pass any portion of the physical agility test.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age, but less than 40 years of age on or before July 18, 2026
  • Must be a United States citizen
  • Must be able to read and write the English language
  • Must have a valid United States driver’s license
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED

PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST INFORMATION: The physical agility test is a pass/fail rating. In order to pass the physical agility test, all applicants must complete the Ohio Peace Officer Basic Training Program Physical Fitness Standards. The agility test will consist of sit-ups, push-ups and a one-and-a-half-mile run. Agility standardsThe agility test will be given at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Lorain County Community College, 1005 N. Abbe Rd., Elyria, Ohio, in the Ewing Center Field House.  

WRITTEN TEST INFORMATION: Once the applicant passes the physical agility test, the applicant will move on to the written portion of the test. The written test has several components. In order to pass, an applicant must receive a minimum cumulative score of 75% on the written test, and an applicant may not score below 60% on an individual written test component.

The written examination will be held on Saturday July 18, 2026, at Lorain County Community College Ewing Center Field House (PE 103). NOTE: this is the same day as the physical agility test. The test will begin at 1:00 p.m. and you must register by 12:30 p.m. You must bring with you a photo-id (preferably a driver’s license); this will be required for entrance to the exam. Also bring with you two (2) No. 2 lead pencils.

NOTE: If an individual has taken the Ohio Peace Officer Basic Training Program physical fitness test in the last year, it is not necessary to re-take the agility test. It is the applicants’ responsibility to submit the form, with the application, showing how many sit-ups, push-ups and time of the mile and a half run. This form must be dated and signed by the fitness instructor. The certificate or results must be dated July 18, 2025 or later to be valid and must be turned in with the application.

BACKGROUND CHECK:Suitable applicants who have passed all portions of the examination, and who have been placed on the Eligibility (for hire) List, may undergo a background check prior to actual hire. In addition to investigating/verifying information contained on the Personal History Questionnaire, the background check may include psychological testing, a polygraph test and drug screening. The background check will also include a criminal history check, a credit check and contact with persons who may have information relative to an applicant’s character and qualifications to be a police officer. If an applicant is found to have given false or deliberately incomplete information at any time, the Civil Service Commission may remove the applicant from the Eligibility List.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Applications will be accepted beginning Monday June 15, 2026, through Monday July 13, 2026. The completed application form, physical agility certificate, Essential Functions for Police Officer, and any documents for extra credit must be submitted through PoliceApp.com.
