  4.  » Empty. Clean. Dry. — Updated Recycling Information for Elyria Residents

The City of Elyria is sharing updated recycling information and reminders to help residents better understand what belongs in the green bin — and what should be kept out.

Residents will begin seeing updated recycling information included in utility bills, on the City’s website, and through the City’s social media channels. Informational stickers will also be placed on residents’ recycle bins. The goal is to make recycling easier to understand and help residents feel more confident that the items they place in the bin are actually being recycled

The City is reminding residents that recyclables should be empty, clean, and dry before being placed in the bin. Recyclable containers should be free of food and liquid, rinsed when needed, and dry before being placed in the recycling bin. Residents are also reminded to place recyclables loose in the green bin and not inside plastic bags

“A lot of us grew up hearing that we should recycle as much as possible,” said Mayor Kevin A. Brubaker. “Today, we know it’s just as important to keep the wrong items out of the bin. We want to make recycling simpler and clearer for residents.

Plastic bags, food waste, Styrofoam, clothing, batteries, yard waste, cords and wires, and scrap steel should never be placed in recycling bins. These items can contaminate the recycling stream and may cause entire loads to be sent to the landfill instead

If residents are unsure whether an item belongs in the recycling bin, the City encourages them to remember one simple rule: When in doubt, throw it out

A full list of accepted and prohibited recycling items, along with additional recycling information and frequently asked questions, can be found at cityofelyria.org/department/sanitation/recycling or by contacting the City of Elyria Sanitation Department at 440-322-3895.
