By law, U.S. citizens have a voice when federal actions will affect properties that qualify for the National Register of Historic Places, the nation’s official list of historic properties.

Section 106 refers to the same section of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. It requires Federal agencies to take into account the effects of their undertakings on historic properties and afford the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) a reasonable opportunity to comment on such undertakings.

The City of Elyria coordinates with the Ohio Historic Preservation Office as part of the environmental review process for all projects using federal funds.
