BASIC DETAILS

After a year of adjusted plans due to COVID-19, the traditional Memorial Day Parade and Tribute to honor and mourn our country’s fallen military personnel has returned. 

Pre-Parade Remembrance Ceremony

Join us downtown at Ely Square Park for a pre-parade rememberance ceremony from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. in collaboration with American Legion Post 12. The ceremony will also mark the first time the updated Ely Square Fountain will be turned on for the season. Previous Mayors, and all fountain donors will be invited to join for the occasion.

Color Guard

Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem, and other selections

9:50 – 10:00 a.m. Brief Ely Square Fountain Season Turn-On Ceremony
10:15 a.m.  Initial Firing of the Cannon

Memorial Day Parade

This year, the Memorial Day Parade returns to its traditional route through Downtown Elyria and the historical Washington Avenue neighborhood, concluding near Ridgelawn Cemetery. The parade begins promptly at 10:30 a.m.

Parade Route
  • Court Street & Broad Street
  • East on Broad Street to Washington Avenue
  • Washington Avenue to Harrison Street
  • East on Harrison to Glenwood Street
  • Ends at Harrison & Glenwood

Staging Details 

Parade staging is from 9:00 – 10:25 a.m.; apply to participate here

Divisions & Staging: 

  • 1st Division: Forms on Court St. between 2nd Street & Broad St.
  • 2nd Division: Forms behind City Hall on 2nd Street, enter via West Ave.
  • 3rd Division: Form behind the Justice Center on 2nd Street (Parking Lot)
  • 4th Division: Form on 2nd Street (between Middle & East Ave) and will travel west bound on Second to Court Street

Participants will be organized in specific divisions based on application details. 

A finalized list of participants and divisions will be shared here the Friday before Memorial Day. 

Post-Parade Ceremonies

This year, the Memorial Day Parade returns to its traditional route through Downtown Elyria and the historical Washington Avenue neighborhood, concluding near Ridgelawn Cemetery. The parade begins promptly at 10:30 a.m. 

Parade End – 1:00 p.m. Refreshments, including hot dogs, bottled water, and more will be  available at American Legion Post 12 (393 Ohio Street, Elyria 44035) ahead of the traditional service at Ridgelawn Ceremony. 
1:00 p.m. 

 Memorial Day Service at Ridgelawn Cemetery (285 Columbus St, Elyria, OH 44035). 

3:00 – 7:00 p.m. 

 Taps will be played at various cemeteries throughout Lorain County, concluding at Brookdale Cemetery in Elyria (41600 Oberlin-Elyria Road, Elyria OH 44035).
