Service Worker I – CDL – Water Distribution Department
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
- Performs all aspects of water distribution maintenance.
- Performs any and all department tasks and assists in the operation of any and all equipment.
- Performs heavy work for an extended period of time under varied climactic conditions.
- Must be available for emergencies which occur during off-duty hours.
- Responsible for compliance with all safety standards and regulations in the division as established by department protocol, city policy and PERRP.
- Must be able to operate various equipment making sure that utilities and other underground installations are not damaged in the process.
- Repair valves and pipe fitting of all sizes.
- Must be able to locate with electric locator, etc., lines and boxes
- Must be able to weld.
- Must be able to read, repair, and replace meters of all sizes.
- Must be able to flare all size lead, plastic, and copper lines plus connect house services and double heads.
- Must be able to install, repair, and replace all size mains and hydrants.
- Must be able to make taps of all sizes.
- All other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.
- Must be able to perform heavy manual labor, which includes lifting, reaching, stretching and bending.
- Must have and continually maintain a working telephone (proof will be required and records must be kept up to date).
- Must be trustworthy and able to communicate satisfactorily with other employees and the general public.
- Must have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and be in possession of and continually maintain a valid Ohio Driver’s license. Must maintain, at minimum, an Ohio Class B CDL with air brake endorsement.
- Must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D.
- Must have the ability to perform all required duties.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:
Knowledge of safety procedures associated with excavating work; knowledge of and ability to use hand and power tools and equipment common to excavation, backhoes and water distribution maintenance work; ability to identify unsafe conditions of equipment and facilities and take appropriate action; ability to work independently and with others; knowledge of maintenance practices associated with water distribution facilities; ability to make independent decisions regarding maintenance of facilities and maintenance of equipment; ability to communicate effectively with general public and staff regarding maintenance of water distribution system; and ability and interest to expand knowledge, skills and abilities in performing these tasks.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
The following are examples only and are not intended to be all-inclusive:
Backhoe, trucks of various sizes; hand tools and equipment; chain saws; tractors; general maintenance hand tool; snow and leave removal equipment; power equipped tapping machines; abrasive blade saws; power equipped guillotine saw; hydraulic jacking machine; jack hammers; gas powered electric welders.
INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORK CONDITIONS:
Has exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid and/or windy conditions while working in very physically demanding jobs. Work involves frequent exposure to unpleasant elements to include trench work on a regular basis. Shovels dirt and stone, operates equipment, hand and power tools.
RATE OF PAY:
STEP C $23.0399 NOTE: Successful bidder will enter the
STEP B $23.5527 classification at the Step C level.
STEP A $23.9830
SCHEDULE OF HOURS:
Regular work schedule Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. EST.
**May apply to Daylight Savings Time during appropriate season**
***May be required to work overtime per the union contract***
This position demands off-schedule hours, call-in hours, stand-by work, and other non-routinely scheduled duties. Incumbents must understand that their flexibility is second to the City’s work demands during times of weather or after hour service emergencies.
