GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

1.)   Operates heavy motorized equipment in order to assist with the efficient delivery of City services (i.e., dump truck, excavator, backhoe, pavement breaker, tractor trailer, snow plow, roller, etc.); inspects equipment in order to ensure safe operation.

2.)   Performs a variety of labor tasks in order to assist with the efficient delivery of Elyria city services (i.e., Repairs water mains and other City infrastructure. mows grass, plows snow, loads trucks, delivers equipment and supplies. etc.)

3.)   Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.

4.)    Performs a variety of unskilled tasks in connection with the maintenance and repair of City property and all other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.)   Must demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.

2.)    Must be able to perform heavy manual labor, which includes lifting, reaching, stretching, and bending.

3.)   Must be trustworthy and able to communicate satisfactorily with other employees and the general public.

4.)    Must have, continually maintain, and be able to answer a working telephone (proof will be required and records must be kept up to date)

5.)   Must be in possession and continually maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-A).

6.)    Must have the ability to understand and carry out detailed written and oral instructions.

7.)   Must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D.  Two (2) years’ experience as Light Equipment Operator or Maintenance a plus

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be proficient in the operation of backhoes, excavators, skid steering loaders, bulldozers and other earthmoving and heavy roadway
  • Must have skill in heavy motor vehicle
  • Knowledge of operating principles of internal combustion
  • Knowledge of safety practices and
  • Considerable knowledge of the safety precautions expected of the operator of heavy duty equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the operating problems inherent in the operation of such equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and/or regulations; department policies and procedures; road construction, maintenance and repair; mechanical maintenance; traffic control; traffic signals; supervisory and practices.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

The following are examples only and are not intended to be all-inclusive. Backhoe, excavator, pavement breaker, skid loader, tractor -trailer, tractor, salt­spreader, front-end loader, power tools, concrete saw, pneumatic tamper and hammer, lawn mowers and a variety of hand tools and other similar departmental equipment.

Successful bidder must have proficiency and past experience in excavating around “live” utility lines, including water, gas, electricity and communications.   This is not an apprenticeship position.  

INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works with and around motorized equipment; is exposed to traffic, dust, dirt, fumes and noise; lifts and moves heavy objects.  Has exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid and/or windy conditions while working on various jobs. At times extended work hours will be necessary to return the water mains and service lines to full operation.

Rate of Pay

$24.5613

SCHEDULE OF HOURS:

Regular work hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

***May be required to work some overtime hours per Union Contract.

This position demands off-schedule hours, call-in hours, stand-by work, and other non-­ routinely scheduled duties.  Incumbents must understand that their flexibility is second to the City’s work demands during times of weather or service emergencies.
