JOB OPENING

The City of Elyria is currently accepting applications for the position of Route Manager I (CDL-B) in the Sanitation Department.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

  1. Operate a Rear and/or Side Load Sanitation Truck Unit which includes:
    1. Driving throughout entire route.
    2. Making all scheduled stops.
    3. Loading all required refuse at a rate of speed sufficient to cover the entire assigned route or area in the prescribed time.
  1. Perform the following daily tasks on assigned unit prior to the completion of shift:
    1. Refuel as necessary.
    2. Properly clean inside and outside.
    3. Report all observed mechanical problems or malfunctions.
    4. Perform general maintenance as directed by appropriate supervisor.
  1. Perform all other departmental tasks as directed by appropriate supervisor.
  2. Safety precautions are expected of the operator of the heavy-duty sanitation trucks.

QUALIFICATIONS 

  1. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  2. Must be in the possession and continually maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class- B with air brake endorsement.
  3. Must be able to perform heavy manual labor, which includes lifting, reaching, stretching and bending.
  4. Must be dependable and in excellent physical condition.
  5. Must have and continually maintain a working telephone (proof will be required and records must be kept up to date).
  6. Must be trustworthy and able to satisfactorily communicate with other employees and the general public
  7. Must demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.
  8. Ability to work independently, with teams and with other City departments.
  9. Ability to identify unsafe conditions of equipment and report same to management.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Must have appropriate knowledge of Sanitation Department refuse collection and disposal requirements, procedures, and equipment.
  2. Must have appropriate skills in order to perform minor vehicle repairs and adjustments.
  3. Must have knowledge of and be able to perform a variety of unskilled maintenance and manual tasks and have the ability to properly use basic tools.
  4. Must have the ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  5. Must act in a prudent manner in the protection of and maintenance of city equipment and property.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED

The following are examples only and are not intended to be all-inclusive:

Heavy-duty sanitation trucks, possibly snowplow, wood chipper and leaf removal equipment.

INHERENTLY DANGEROUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:

Have exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, and/or windy conditions while working in very physically demanding jobs.  The incumbent must be able to deal with traffic conditions and parked vehicles while on the route.

RATE OF PAY:

STEP C:         $23.1514                                             NOTE: Successful bidder will enter

STEP B:         $23.6042                                             classification at the Step C level.

STEP A:         $24.1057  

SCHEDULE OF HOURS:

Regular schedule – Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

**Some overtime may be required per union contract. **
