The City of Elyria has been recognized for the past 16 years as a “Tree City USA” by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and The National Arbor Day Foundation. To qualify for this honor, the City designated the Parks and Recreation Board as our Tree Board, established ordinances for proper tree management and spent more than $2 per capita through a well managed tree maintenance program.

The Parks & Recreation Department is responsible for maintenance of the trees on curblawns throughout the community. Residents with questions or concerns about the trees including trimming, removals, replanting and other maintenance issues should contact the main office at (440) 326-1500.

Trimming and tree removal are done on an “as-needed” basis throughout the year. Based on fund availability tree planting is done in late fall and early spring when most trees are in their inactive season. When new curblawn trees are planted, residents are encouraged to water these trees during the first couple years after planting.

If you want to plant a tree in your curblawn at your own expense, then contact the office for site evaluation and tree species approval. An approved list of tree species to be matched with appropriated site conditions is available.
